Cambridge Lower Secondary and Checkpoint Explained for Parents

If your child attends an international school in Malaysia, they may follow Cambridge Lower Secondary before IGCSE and sit Cambridge Checkpoint tests at the end of it. Here is what the programme covers, how the tests work and how to read the results.

What is Cambridge Lower Secondary?

Cambridge Lower Secondary is the stage of the Cambridge programme between Cambridge Primary and IGCSE. It covers stages 7, 8 and 9, usually for students aged about 11 to 14. Many international schools call these Years 7 to 9. It plays a similar role to Form 1 to 3 in Malaysian national schools, which no longer end with the PT3 exam. Our guide to Cambridge Lower Secondary covers the programme and all 13 subjects.

What is Cambridge Checkpoint?

Checkpoint tests are set and marked by Cambridge, usually at the end of stage 9. They check how well a student has learned the Lower Secondary curriculum before starting IGCSE. The tests are in:

  • English, or English as a Second Language (a student takes one, not both)
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Global Perspectives, offered in the May and October series only

Checkpoint is not a certificate exam like IGCSE. Schools use the results to report progress to parents and, often, to plan IGCSE subjects and sets.

When the tests take place

From 2026 there are three test series a year: March, May and October. Schools choose the series that fits their school year. Each test must be taken on the day set in Cambridge's timetable. If a student misses a test in a subject, they get no result for that subject in that series, but the school can enter them in the next one.

SeriesTest datesResults to schools
March 20262 to 12 March7 May
May 202611 to 21 May23 July
October 202613 to 21 October17 December

Results reach schools about eight to nine weeks after each series, and printed statements of achievement follow a few weeks later. Global Perspectives is not offered in March. A student can sit either English or English as a Second Language, not both. On recent papers the subjects carry the new curriculum codes: English 0861, English as a Second Language 0876, Mathematics 0862 and Science 0893. Past papers from before 2023 use the old codes (1111, 1110, 1112 and 1113) and the old curriculum, so use them with care.

How to read the results

Since the May 2023 series, each subject gets a score from 0 to 50 and a performance band. The score is not a percentage: Cambridge converts the marks to a scale that allows for how hard each test was. The same score means the same level of performance in every subject.

Cambridge Checkpoint scores and performance bands
ScorePerformance band
41 to 50Outstanding
31 to 40High
21 to 30Good
11 to 20Aspiring
1 to 10Basic
0Unclassified

The band appears on your child's Statement of Achievement. School reports also break each subject into strands, such as biology, chemistry and physics in Science, which shows where to focus. Results from before May 2023 used an older 0.0 to 6.0 scale, so older siblings' results are not directly comparable.

How to help your child prepare

  • Start from the strand results. A weak strand, such as number in Mathematics or physics in Science, is easier to fix than a weak subject.
  • Read in English every day. Checkpoint Science and Mathematics questions need careful reading, not just calculation.
  • Ask the school about practice tests. Many schools use Cambridge Progression Tests, which report in the same bands, or past Checkpoint papers during the year.
  • Think ahead to IGCSE. Gaps left at stage 9 grow in IGCSE Mathematics and Sciences, so stage 9 is a good time to close them.

What to ask a tutor

  • Whether they teach the Cambridge Lower Secondary curriculum, not only IGCSE or SPM.
  • How they use your child's strand results to plan lessons.
  • Whether they can help with English as a Second Language as well as English.
  • How they prepare students for the move to IGCSE.
