IGCSE or SPM is one of the biggest choices Malaysian parents make for secondary school. Both are respected qualifications, but they lead to different doors — especially for public universities. Here is an honest comparison.
| IGCSE | SPM | |
|---|---|---|
| Set by | Cambridge International (or Pearson Edexcel) | The Ministry of Education's examinations board (Lembaga Peperiksaan) |
| Usually taken at | International and many private schools | Government and national schools; open to private candidates |
| School years | Year 10 and Year 11, about ages 14–16 | Form 4 and Form 5, sat at about age 17 |
| Exams | June and November series; results in August and January | Speaking and practicals from late October, written papers late November to December; results the following year |
| Grades | A* to G (Cambridge); 9 to 1 (Edexcel) | A+ to G |
| Required subjects | Chosen by the school and student | Core subjects; a pass in Bahasa Melayu and Sejarah is needed for the certificate |
| Language | English | Mostly Bahasa Melayu, with English and some subjects in English |
Which is harder?
Neither is simply harder; they are hard in different ways. IGCSE questions are set and answered in English and lean on applying ideas to unfamiliar situations, and some subjects have Core and Extended tiers. SPM covers a wide syllabus — SPM Mathematics draws on Form 1 to Form 5 — and includes higher-order (KBAT) questions, and Bahasa Melayu and Sejarah must be passed. A student strong in English often finds IGCSE more comfortable; a student taught in Bahasa Melayu may find SPM more natural.
What each leads to
Private colleges and universities accept both. For A-Level, foundation or diploma courses, five credits including English is a typical entry requirement, whether from SPM, IGCSE or O Level.
Public universities, matriculation and the civil service lean on SPM:
- Public universities ask for SPM Bahasa Melayu and Sejarah, including from students outside the national system.
- The matriculation programme takes current SPM candidates.
- Civil service jobs require a credit in SPM Bahasa Melayu.
So IGCSE students who may want a public university place or a government job can also sit SPM Bahasa Melayu and Sejarah as private candidates. In January 2026 the Prime Minister said international school students must take SPM Bahasa Melayu and History; how and when that applies was still under review in early 2026, so check the latest rules with your school.
Can you switch?
Moving from SPM to IGCSE, or the other way, is easiest before Form 4 or Year 10, when the two-year courses begin. Mathematics and the sciences overlap a great deal; English and Bahasa Melayu are where students switching most often need help. Either way, talk to the new school about which subjects and exam series your child will sit.
How to choose
- Think about where your child is heading. A public university or civil-service path favours SPM, or IGCSE plus SPM Bahasa Melayu and Sejarah. Studying abroad or at a private university works well with either.
- Consider the language of learning. Children who think and read best in English tend to do well in IGCSE.
- Look at the next step. Both lead to A-Level, foundation and diploma courses; STPM and matriculation follow naturally from SPM.

Questions parents ask
Is IGCSE harder than SPM?
They are hard in different ways. IGCSE is set and answered in English and leans on applying ideas to unfamiliar situations; SPM covers a wide syllabus, such as Form 1 to Form 5 content in SPM Mathematics, includes higher-order (KBAT) questions, and requires a pass in Bahasa Melayu and Sejarah.
Can IGCSE students enter a Malaysian public university?
Public universities ask for SPM Bahasa Melayu and Sejarah, including from students outside the national system, so IGCSE students aiming for a public university can sit those two SPM papers as private candidates.
Do private universities accept IGCSE?
Yes. For A-Level, foundation or diploma courses, private colleges usually ask for five credits including English and treat SPM, IGCSE and O Level results on the same footing.
When is the best time to switch between SPM and IGCSE?
Before Form 4 or Year 10, when the two-year courses begin. Mathematics and the sciences overlap a great deal; English or Bahasa Melayu is where students switching most often need help.
